Insights On Tech

Issue 1
Abstract image of technology
Welcome to the first issue of Insights On Tech. This is a new edition to the Goldstein Media newsletters, which will focus on existing and emerging technology for business.

I have been in the technology sector for more than 15 years. First as a professional journalist covering technology for traditional newspapers (remember them?), and then as a digital marketer, web designer, and creative director.

Throughout these years, I’ve kept my finger on the pulse of what’s going on in technology. Now I want to share my knowledge with you.

As of right now, this newsletter will be monthly. If news breaks and needs coverage, you will get a bonus issue.

Don’t worry, you will still receive the monthly News You Can Use newsletter as well.

Thank you for all your support over the years and your feedback as well.

On to today’s topic -- Automation Tools.
Today I want to talk about automation and how you can use it to help you be more successful at work.

Sites like IFTTT and Zapier help people streamline their workflow every day, both personally and professionally.

Both sites allow you to hook up various internet services as well as some physical internet-connected devices (ie. smart-light bulbs, security systems, thermostats).

Both Zapier and IFTTT generally follow the same concept. The biggest difference between the two is that IFTTT tends to, in my opinion, be more user friendly with the design of their interface. Whereas Zapier is geared more toward the business world and is a bit more analytical.

Zapier and IFTTT both have paid options, though IFTTT is more freely robust for personal use than Zapier.

So what would you use automation for exactly? Anything and everything. Here are just a few examples:

  • Turn on your office lights on automatically at a certain time and set the color of the light and brightness.
  • Adjust the color of the lights in your office as the day goes on so that as it gets darker out, your light would adjust accordingly. (ie. dimmer during the day and brighter at night).
  • Send specific emails to a spreadsheet for later analysis.
  • Add new contacts on your phone to your CRM.
  • Save all new Gmail attachments to Google Drive.
  • Send email via Gmail for new Google Forms submissions.
The possibilities are truly endless. Now you’re probably asking, why can I just do most of that myself manually. You can. But the idea of automation is to prioritize your time for tasks you absolutely need to do and to cut out the extraneous tasks that can be automated to make your life easier and more productive.

Do you use Zapier or IFTTT? What have you found works well for you? I want to hear from you. Hit reply to this email and I’ll get your responses directly to my inbox.

Together we will optimize our lives for the better.
